Giant walls made of lush green plants or hundreds of flowers (à la Kanye’s first, over-the-top Mother’s Day gift to Kim in 2014) are nothing new, but one masterful florist has managed to outdo even the most eye-catching renditions. For this year’s Tony Awards red carpet, Raul Àvila, floral designer for the Met Gala, conceptualized and built a spectacular flower wall that took nearly 20 hours and 50 crew members to assemble. Oh, and they used about 100,000 red roses. With all eyes on his gorgeous new work tonight, Àvila explains, “I wanted the red carpet to evoke the style and elegance of the theater. I chose roses in a striking red to cover the length of the step and repeat. It’s the ideal backdrop for arrivals to capture the glamour of the evening.” A scene-stealing job well done indeed.
